UAE Small Businesses Urged to Learn from AWS Outage That Disrupted Global Internet

A recent Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage on October 20, 2025, which affected over 2,000 businesses worldwide, has highlighted critical lessons for small enterprises in the UAE. The disruption, originating from AWS’s US-East-1 region, caused widespread access issues for websites, applications, and payment systems globally.

Key Takeaways for UAE Small Businesses:

1. Diversify Cloud Service Providers: Relying on a single cloud provider can create a single point of failure. UAE small businesses should consider diversifying their cloud services to mitigate risks associated with potential outages.
2. Implement Multi-Regional Redundancy: Hosting data or applications in multiple geographic locations ensures continuity during regional failures. This strategy can help maintain service availability even when one region experiences issues.
3. Establish Robust Backup Systems: Regularly backing up data and having contingency plans in place can minimize downtime and data loss during service disruptions.
4. Choose Platform Partners with Operational Continuity: Partnering with service providers that prioritize reliability and have contingency measures in place can help ensure business operations continue smoothly during unforeseen events.

The AWS outage serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in centralized cloud infrastructures. By adopting these strategies, UAE small businesses can enhance their resilience against similar disruptions in the future.
